Welcome to Public Works

Public Works is committed to providing high-quality services that meet the needs of the community. The Department plans, designs, constructs, maintains, and operates public infrastructure, including roads, sidewalks, water and sewer systems, drainage, bridges, streetlights, traffic signals, parks, public facilities, and the urban forest.

The Department consists of two divisions: Engineering and Field Operations. Together, our engineers, field personnel, and support staff manage City infrastructure and deliver improvements that enhance roadway safety, water quality, pedestrian access, and recreational opportunities.

Public Works serves residents, businesses, developers, schools, agencies, utility companies, and others doing business in the City.

Engineering Public Works Counter

The Engineering Division provides assistance at the Public Works Counter, located at City Hall. Walk-ins and appointments are welcome.

Report Water Issues 

To report a water emergency during regular business hours, Monday through Thursday, 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., please call (323) 563-5790. See the Public Notice(PDF, 1MB) for additional information. 

For water emergencies on weekends or after hours, please call the South Gate Police Department at (323) 563-5436. The Police Dispatcher will contact the on-call Water Division personnel.

Residents in the Hollydale area of South Gate are served by Golden State Water Company and should call (800) 999-4033 for water emergencies.

Encroachment Permits:

Encroachment Permits are required to work within the Public Right of Way. For more information on encroachment permits, please click the link.

Plan Check Services:

For projects that have a valuation of over $50,000 and/ or exceed 800 square feet of redevelopment must be reviewed by Public Works. For more information, please follow the link.
