Pay Your Bills

Utility bills are sent out to all properties in South Gate on a monthly basis. The residential bill contains your charges for water consumption, street sweeping, and sewer maintenance. Trash pickup is billed directly by the waste hauler. For water billing questions please call the service counter at 323-563-9586. It is important that you leave a message to get a call back. If your call is not answered it is due to employees helping customers in line at the service counter.

How to Pay a Utility Bill

Utility bills can be paid at the service counter at City Hall, using the drop boxes both outside and inside City Hall, by sending a payment through the mail, or online.

Payment Types Accepted: MC, Visa, Discovery, and Personal Checking Account
If you are making a payment through your bank or a check cashing service please allow for a 7-10 day period to fully process.

Water Bill Reimbursement Credit Program

On November 20, 2023, City of South Gate Council Members approved the Water Bill Reimbursement Program. This program was developed to assist our water customers that recorded abnormal water usage on their August, September, and/or October 2023 water bill.

Water Assistance Program

Eligible residents can qualify for a one-time payment assistance, up to $15,000 through the Low-Income Household Water Assistance (LIWHAP).

On July 31, 2023, The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has permitted the extension of the LIHWAP program through the end of March 31, 2024. CSD will immediately work with Local Service Providers to extend the program through Dec. 31, 2023, and then evaluate further extension of the program.

How Do I Apply?

Households can apply for LIHWAP assistance through their local LIHWAP service provider, Long Beach Community Action Partnership.

Contesting a Water Bill

If you believe that your water bill is inaccurate, you may request a meter re-read within 30 days of the date of the bill by calling the Utility Bill Payments office at 323-563-9586. After 30 days the city cannot read the meter for the period in question.

 

COVID-19 Relief Assistance and Notice of Intent to Reinstate Water Shut-off Policy

In March 2020, the City suspended late fees and water service shutoffs for all water accounts to help South Gate water customers manage the economic hardships brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. The federal COVID-19 public health emergency declaration expired May 11, 2023, and as a result, the City will resume assessing late fees and water shutoff proceedings for residential and commercial, and industrial billing cycles starting July 10, 2023

Discontinuation of Water Service

For more information pertinent to the City's policy on delinquent notices, water shut off's, and payment arrangement, please refer to the SB 998 Policy and Notice.         

Request for Payment Plan Arrangement

You must indicate your willingness to enter into an amortization agreement, alternative payment schedule or a plan for deferred or reduced payment.  Any customer who is unable to pay for water service within the City's normal payment period may request an alternative payment plan by contacting the City in person, by telephone (323) 563-9586, or by email - rrobinson@sogate.org.  The customer shall pay the unpaid balance over a period of twelve (12) months.  For full details please click on the SB 998 Notice and Policy - Discontinuation of Water. 

Reestablishing Service

As noted on the Turn off Notice, if a payment is not received within 7 days, your meter will be pulled and an additional charge of $204.28 to restore the meter will be required for service. In addition to your delinquent amount, this $204.28 will not be applied to your final bill as it is for used the meter pull and reset of labor.

Warning: Adding a jumper to a pulled meter pipe is considered stealing and will be prosecuted as such.
