The City of South Gate proudly unveiled the “Henry C. Gonzalez Auditorium” in honor of former Mayor Henry C. Gonzalez during a dedication ceremony on September 28, 2023.

 

Former Mayor Henry C. Gonzalez was first elected to the South Gate City Council in April 1982, which started his historic 27-year career as an elected official. In 1983, he made history by becoming the first Latino to serve as Mayor of the City of South Gate, a position he would ultimately hold a total of seven times during his career on the South Gate City Council.

 

He also dedicated his life to supporting the youth in the community. He founded the South Gate High School Booster Club and the South Gate Youth Football program. He also served as the District Chairman for the Boy Scouts of America.

 

Former Mayor Gonzalez touched numerous lives and was known as a beacon of light, setting the highest standards for political ethics and integrity in the region and fought to keep South Gate free of corrupt influence during his entire career.
