First elected in 2005. Councilmember Hurtado served our community in various capacities. Including: 12 years as Councilmember/Mayor, 5 years as Planning Commissioner, President/Board-Member Independent Cities Finance Authority, President/Board-Member Gateway Cities Council of Governments, and Co-Chair I-710 Project Committee.
For his leadership, Councilmember Hurtado has received numerous Certificates of Recognition from Local, Country, State, and Federal Officials. Councilmember Hurtado was engaged in keeping our city from bankruptcy during the recession, helped bring in the two major shopping centers, helped establish the Neighborhood Watch Programs, helped bring improvements to our parks, brought to Tweedy Mile the Tree-Lights that brighten up our business district at night, and many other accomplishments.
Volunteer/Work with Youth
Since the early 1990’s, Councilmember Hurtado has dedicated his time in promoting programs for the youth of our community. He has fought for additional schools that alleviate overcrowding. Organizes fund raisers that benefit many programs throughout our community. He has been a volunteer President of the SGJAA for over two decades. His efforts have helped maintain the fees the same for nearly two decades. Councilmember Hurtado has also been very supportive of the other youth programs, such as the Miss SG Pageant, AYSO, SG Aquatics , and SG Youth Football who provide great activities for our youth. Over the last few years, Councilmember Hurtado has also been a member of the coaching staff of SGHS Softball.
For his efforts, Councilmember Hurtado has received recognition, most notably with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Commission for South Gate Youth.
After over 30 years in Management from the USPS, Councilmember Hurtado returned to Cal State University Dominguez Hills in 2017. In 2019 Councilmember Hurtado graduated with Honors with a Bachelor’s Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies/Global Studies, which focuses on local issues impacting communities such as ours.
Council member Hurtado has been a member of our community since 1984. This past December he and his wife Lily celebrated their 39th wedding anniversary. They raised their children in South Gate. His son is now a Crime Scene Investigator. His daughter Natalie is a teacher at a catholic school. Council member Hurtado is now a proud grandfather of a 9 year old granddaughter and a 6 year old grandson.
Council member Hurtado loves to stay active. He ran and completed his first marathon at the age of 45. He has completed 9 marathons as well as one ½ Marathon. He coaches youth baseball, softball, and basketball. He loves his 1960’s music, especially The Beatles. His son now plays John Lennon in a tribute band. Five times a week he runs 4 or 5 miles. 3 times a week he lifts weights. Council member Hurtado is considering a return to college for a teaching credential.
