Welcome to Public Works!
Public Works is committed to serving the community to provide the best quality of public service. The Public Works Department is responsible for the planning, design, construction, maintenance and operation of public infrastructure, which includes roadways, alleys, water, sewer, drainage, and sidewalk infrastructure, bridges, urban forest, vehicle fleet, public facilities, rights-of-way, street lights, traffic signals and parks.
The Department consists of two primary divisions; Engineering and Field Operations. Our team is comprised of engineers, field operations personnel, and support staff collectively working together to manage City infrastructure to ensure the needs of the community are being met, such as through infrastructure improvements that enhance roadway safety, improve water quality, provide safer sidewalks or provide more recreational opportunities. The department proudly serves to facilitate the needs of residents, businesses, developers, schools, agencies, utility companies and any other entity interested in doing business in the City.
For more information, please explore this website or contact the Public Works Department at (323) 357-9657 for the Engineering Division or (323) 563-5785 for the Field Operations Division. The Engineering Division is available to provide support at the Public Works Counter, located in the City Hall, and will accept walk-ins and appointments. To schedule an appointment, please contact Alan Galvan at (323) 357-5814 or agalvan@sogate.org
City Wide Flushing Program will Start Zone 4 on March 21, 2023
To assist in our primary mission of providing safe and reliable water to the community, the Public Works Department Water Division will start Zone 4 flushing on March 21, 2023. The flushing operation will take place at night when our records indicate water demand is at its lowest point and will take approximately four months to complete. Weekly notices, including door hangers to affected areas will be sent and posted on the City’s webpage and other social media platforms.
City Crews will begin their activities on Tuesday night at 10:00 pm and end them by 4:00 am the following morning, concluding on Thursday of each week. The City is taking several steps to minimize the potential impact to water customers.
The area of operation is between Firestone Boulevard to the north, Ardmore Avenue to south, California Avenue to the east, to Reisner Way west, which is in Zone 4. The attached map shows where Zone 4 is in more detail.(PDF, 584KB)
While all steps have been taken to reduce the chance of a customer experiencing a water discoloration episode, customers in the impacted area are strongly encouraged to not use water during these times to the extent possible. Should you experience discolored water, we ask that you flush your own house pipes by running faucets for approximately 5 minutes or less. This should dispel any such discolored water that by small chance got into your house or business water pipes. Should you have continued water discoloration after flushing, please call our Public Works Department at 323-563-5790.
The flushing of water pipes is a standard procedure for water purveyors across the State. Our mission is simply to provide safe and reliable water to customers in South Gate.
