The Water Division is responsible for the maintenance and operation of the city's water system and services over 16,500 connections to most of South Gate. The system includes:
- 2 elevated tanks
- 4-million gallon underground reservoir
- 4 surface tanks with 8.2 million gallons of storage
- 9 active wells
- 135 miles of distribution pipeline
Upcoming Water System Maintenance and Fire Hydrant Flow Testing: In an effort to preserve water quality and system reliability, the Public Works Department’s Water Division will be operating water valves located at 9615 Pinehurst Ave and 4155 Tweedy Blvd. The Water Division anticipates that this work may temporarily cause water to discolor in the central region of the City as work will take place on a large water transmission mainline. The City is taking a number of measures to minimize the potential impact to water customers. The Water Division will initiate a flushing program in the central region of the City for two days, in advance of the valve operation and the fire flow test in order to clean the water system pipes. Flushing operations will be conducted at night when water demand and use is low. The Water Division will also flush the water system in tandem with the valve operations and fire flow test on the third night. Please be informed that flushing operations is the industry standard for enhancing water quality and clarity. It typically causes temporary water discoloration however in a localized area, in a manner that is within the control of maintenance staff. Flushing and operational activities will take place on January 17 and 18, 2021. Work will start at 10:00 PM, each night, and take approximately five hours to complete. The water valve operation will take place on Tuesday night starting at 10:00 PM, and also take five hours to complete. In the event that water from your faucets is discolored, we recommend that you flush your system by running faucets for a few minutes. The City does not recommend using discolored water. We do recommend that you minimize use of water, during these times, if possible. Water quality is our top priority, as we continue to make adjustment to the water system to maintain its integrity.
