To assist residential and commercial renters who have been financially impacted by the Coronavirus, the City has adopted tenant protections on evictions in South Gate.
On July 21, 2020 the Board of Supervisors approved an extension of the temporary eviction moratorium for Los Angeles County, that includes South Gate.
The moratorium was extended until February 28,2021 and may be extended by the Board on a month to month basis.
What protections does the moratorium include?
Prohibits evictions for:
- Nonpayment of rent due to a COVID-19 related reason;-No-fault reasons under the County Code; and
- COVID-19 related violations due to unauthorized occupants, pets, or nuisance.
Prohibits rent increases for:
- Rent-stabilized rental units in unincorporated Los Angeles County subject to Chapter 8.52 of the LA County Code; and
- Mobile-home spaces subject to Chapter 8.57 of the Los Angeles County Code.
- Prohibits charging late fees, interest, and any related charges for unpaid rent accrued during the Moratorium Period.

Who do the Renter Protections apply to?
The renter protections apply to all residential and commercial rentals in the City of South Gate, including apartments, duplexes, condominiums and single-family dwellings. The protection applies to all renters, regardless of immigration status.
Does this mean tenants do not have to pay their rent?
Tenants are still obligated to pay lawfully charged rent. However, during the emergency period, tenants may not be evicted for failure to pay rent due to the financial impacts related to COVID-19. Tenants will have up to 12 months following the expiration of the local emergency, June 30, 2020, to repay any back rent due. Landlords and tenants may mutually work out a payment schedule or arrangements for repayment of rent.

Yes, the City is funding an Emergency Rental Assistance Program with Compatior, Inc. and Helpline Youth Counseling to provide rental assistance to residents impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. For more information, please contact the Agencies below:

Free meal delivery service is available to South Gate seniors. The program has two purposes: To help seniors and other adults at high risk from COVID-19 stay home and stay healthy by delivering 3 meals a day, and provide essential economic stimulus to local businesses struggling to stay afloat during the COVID-19 crisis.
