Zoning
What are Zones?
Zoning is a local regulatory system that divides a city into districts and establishes rules governing how land and buildings can be used and developed within each area. It specifies permitted uses, development standards, and building requirements to guide orderly growth and protect public health, safety, and welfare.
The Zoning Code is a living document and is updated periodically. The City of South Gate’s Zoning Code is housed in Title 11 of the city’s Municipal Code. Title 11 can be accessed online here: Title 11 Zoning.
Overlay Zone
An Overlay Zone is a zoning tool that applies additional regulations to a specific area on top of the underlying base zone. It establishes special standards—such as design, environmental, or historic requirements—to address unique conditions while retaining the primary zoning rules.
