Mayor Gil Hurtado was elected in 2005 for his 1st term in office, and was re-elected in 2009, 2013, and 2020 for additional 4-year terms.

He has been married to his wife Lily for 42 years. They made South Gate their home in 1984. Here, they raised their children who attended Bryson Elementary, South Gate Middle School, and South Gate High School. His son is now a CSI while his daughter is an educator. He also has two grandchildren. 

Mayor Hurtado has been very active in our community for many years. For nearly three decades he has been the president of the SGJAA where he has volunteered as a coach, commissioner, and game official. He served one year as the head-coach for SGHS for girls basketball and has been a softball coach for nearly a decade. 

Mayor Hurtado encourages healthy living. He is a pescatarian, mainly due to his love of animals. He continues to be physically active at the age of 62, by lifting weights and running 3-5 miles daily. He participated and completed 9 marathons. The first marathon was at the age of 45. He encourages education as a path to self improvement. At the age of 59 he graduated with Honors from CSUDH with a degree in Global Studies.
