In partnership with Metro, the city offers discounted fare rates on local Metro buses and transit. Reduced fares are available to those who qualify:

  • Seniors/Disabled
  • K-12 Students 
  • College/Vocational Students 

Once your application is approved through the TAP program, you can Load Store Value (money) to your TAP card directly at the South Gate Transit Services office, located at the Sports Center (9520 Hildreth Avenue South Gate, CA 90280). We are open Monday-Friday from 12:00 P.M. - 6:00 P.M. 

Transit Access Pass (TAP)

You will need to obtain a TAP card from Metro. Applications are available at the Transit Services office. The city provides an additional discount for South Gate residents.  Residents must show proof of residency on an annual basis (a utility bill or mailed correspondence) and government issue identification card. 

Once enrolled participant can Load Store Value (money) to their TAP card at the transit office. For applications and more information on reduced fares, please visit Metro’s website.

What is a TAP card and why do I need one?

Metro no longer issues stickers. Everyone wishing to Load Stored Value to their TAP card is required to obtain a Transit Access Pass (TAP) card. TAP cards can be electronically loaded at the Transit Office 9520 Hildreth Avenue. Please call 323-563-5754 for more information.

How do I Load Stored Value (Money) through the City of South Gate?

South Gate residents with eligible bus passes (Reduced Fare TAP cards) may Load Stored Value to their TAP card at the Transit Office (9520 Hildreth Avenue) by presenting a utility bill or a mail correspondence, their government identification card and their bus pass (TAP card). Eligible passes include Senior/Disabled, K-12 and College/Vocational passes. General fare passes are NOT sold at the Transit Office. Please call 323-563-5754 for more information.

How do I obtain the South Gate METRO discount?

Bring a valid picture ID and utility bill with your name and address to the Transit Office (9520 Hildreth Avenue). For K-12 students bring any recent correspondence with the student’s name printed on it (Example: Report Card containing name and address). Please call 323-563-5754 for more information.

When can I Load Stored Value to my TAP card?

My tap card is not working. What can I do?

If your TAP card is not working properly contact Metro Customer Service by calling 866-827-8646 and speak to a customer service representative regarding your reduced bus pass. Please keep your receipt as proof of purchase.

Do I have to be present to Load Stored Value to my TAP card?

You are not required to be present to Load Stored Value to your TAP card.  If the participate is enrolled in the City of South Gate reduce fare program (Renewed annually), then we are able to Load Stored Value to card.  If not, then we won't be able to Load Stored Value to the individual card.
