The City of South Gate is replacing a non-operational groundwater well at the Hawkins Reservoir site to help maintain a reliable local water supply. The project has completed the land survey, and the final design of the replacement well is currently being completed.
Construction of the new well has been temporarily delayed while the City completes the design of a water treatment system that may be needed to remove PFAS, a group of man-made chemicals that have been found in groundwater throughout the region. Designing the well and treatment system together will help ensure the new facility is efficient and ready to provide safe drinking water.
The planned relocation of the I-710 southbound on-ramp at Firestone Boulevard may create additional space next to the Hawkins Reservoir site that would be an ideal location for the future treatment facility. The City is currently awaiting a decision from Caltrans on whether this property will be made available for the project.
The City remains committed to moving this project forward and will begin construction once the treatment facility design and property availability have been finalized.
