To: All registered voters in the City of South Gate

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN, pursuant to California Elections Code § 10403.5 (e), that the date of the General Municipal election for the City of South Gate has been changed from the first Tuesday after the first Monday in March of odd years to the first Tuesday after the first Monday in March of even years, effective March 2020. The terms of all current elected officeholders will be extended by one year. More information may be obtained by calling the Office of the City Clerk, Carmen Avalos at (323) 563-9573.

Registration forms are available at the City Clerk’s Office in City Hall (8650 California Avenue). Your local post office and the Los Angeles County Registrar Recorder (12400 E Imperial Highway, Norwalk) also have the forms available. Voter registration is processed by the California Secretary of State's Office.

Election 2020

Election Results

The 1st semi-official results of ballots cast and votes tallied are scheduled to be reported at approximately 8:30 p.m. on March 3rd.

LA County will continue reporting throughout the evening and Wednesday morning till sunrise, with updates roughly every 30 minutes. The plan is to have the usual ballot counting/tally events throughout the rest of March on Tuesdays and Fridays with new results posted online by 4:00 p.m. on those days.

However, the County may schedule additional ballot counting/tally events that 1st week on Wednesday, March 4th and Thursday, March 5th with posting of results in the afternoon (PM) no later than 4:00. Stay tuned as this is only the preliminary schedule. Canvass Update Schedule(PDF, 80KB)

Also, please note that this year ballot counting will NOT take place at Norwalk Headquarters. The new location is the Downey Tally Operations Center, located at 9150 East Imperial Hwy, Downey, CA 90242.

When are elections held in South Gate?

Elections are held in odd-numbered years and in accordance with established city ordinances. Elections are held in staggered terms, meaning that every 2 years in the odd-numbered years, there are either 2 seats for City Council, 1 seat for City Treasurer, and 1 seat for City Clerk; or 3 seats for City Council up for reelection.

How do I register to vote?

What is the deadline to register to vote?

In California the deadline to register to vote for any election is 15 days before Election Day. Please call 323-563-9573 for more information.

What is a provisional ballot?

While provisional voting may be relatively new in some areas of the country, California's provisional voting statutes have been in effect since 1984. First, provisional voting ensures that no properly registered voter is denied their right to cast a ballot if that voter's name is not on the polling place roster due to a clerical, processing, computer, or other error. Second, provisional voting allows elections officials to ensure that no voter votes twice, either intentionally or inadvertently, in a given election. Please call 323-563-9573 for more information.

What if I want to work at the polls? How do I apply?

To be a poll worker you must be a registered voter in Los Angeles County. Poll workers receive a maximum stipend of $125. Inspectors receive a maximum stipend of $200. You must serve all day on Election Day to receive training stipend.
