The Boulevard Project Phase II CIP No. 476-TRF

The Boulevard Project is an important project as it provided congestion relief, enhanced safety and addressed deferred maintenance on this important corridor. Construction of the first phase of the project has been completed in 2019. The second phase project will continue to make improvements on the following segments:
1. Segment 1 - a 1.4-mile, Firestone Boulevard between Alameda Street and California Avenue.
2. Segment 2 - a 1.1-mile, Firestone Boulevard between California Avenue and Annetta Avenue.

The Phase II improvements includes bus turn outs, street widening, pedestrian lighting, bus shelters, concrete bus pads, pavement rehabilitation, traffic signal and street light modifications, and other ADA improvements needed to complete the project.

Construction of The Boulevard Project is well underway. Construction activities include heavy equipment, traffic control, lane closures, and will temporarily impact parking.  Some construction activities will impact noise levels, such as during concrete removals.  Construction activities will be scheduled to minimize impacts, where feasible. Construction signage will be placed with sufficient time to provided information needed to accommodate parking conditions.

The contractor continues working on safety improvements at Santa Fe Avenue new bus turnout, California Avenue widening, and New College Campus Driveway at Calden Avenue.  On October 11, 2023, the contractor worked at Firestone/Victoria in front of the SGHS to pave the final cap.  All lanes in front of the SGHS are open to traffic now.  At the Firestone Boulevard/California Avenue widening, the traffic signal poles have been relocated.  The traffic signal is fully operational now.

The construction is planned for completion by February 2024.

PLEASE ADHERE TO THE FOLLOWING SAFETY TIPS:

  • Be patient and expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
  • Slow down and watch for workers, heavy equipment, pedestrians and cyclists.
  • Avoid mobile phone use when driving through the construction zone.
  • Watch for lane closures, use alternate routes and follow detours.
  • Do not climb or enter areas where crews are working or materials and equipment are stored.
  • Remember, this is a short-term inconvenience for a long-term traffic solution.
