The City of South Gate is implementing a variety of improvement projects promoting Safe Routes to School. These projects will focus on pedestrian and bikeway safety and accessibility, traffic signal upgrades, and street enhancements. A signicant amount of attention is being granted to improving safety on streets neighboring schools, pedestrian accessibility and overall safety for South Gate students and residents. These projects will be designed to calm traffic and increase community recreational activities. Cycle 8 and Cycle 9 projects of Safe Routes to School are spearheading this effort by developing plans to create safer streets.
Please take a look at our Fact Sheet, which will provide more information on the project such as project funding, specifics, and objectives.
Summary: As a part of the Safe Routes to School Cycle 8 improvement project, traffic signals at two intersections along Southern Avenue, California Avenue and San Juan Avenue, will be temporarily shut down. With the upcoming electrical work at the intersection, it will be necessary to power down the intersection on May 11th and May 12th, 2016 from 7:00AM to 3:30PM.
What to Expect: During the construction period, a four way stop will be put in place until the work is completed. In addition, flaggers will be out directing traffic to minimize any delays that might occur due to this signal turn-off. The City’s goal is always to reduce impacts to the community and ensure your safety.
Minimizing Delays: To avoid congestion related to this work, consider alternative routes and allow extra time to reach your destination. We thank you for your patience as we continue our improvement efforts. Questions?
